Behaviour To Climb The Stepping Stones To Career Success

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Perre Du Plessis The heading of this article could just as well have been “How to position yourself for promotion” or “How to position yourself for career advancement” or “How to climb the success ladder” or something similar. What behaviour will improve your chances for success? Behaviour which can be described as good work ethics. The answer on how to cultivate good work ethics is simple. Make yourself one of the linking pins in your organisation.A linking pin is someone to whom everybody turns to, to get information and advice from. It is also someone who can link persons, sections and departments for better co-operation. But most important of all, it is someone who can exert influence upwards, downwards and sideways in the organisation structure. In other words you must be able to influence people around you to carry out the wishes, policies and strategies of top management, by earning respect through your display of expertise and thoroughness. You must also be able to represent the valid wishes and needs of lower levels to top management. You can become a linking pin by striving to attain the following traits: 1. Cloak yourself with expert knowledge in your technical field of operation. If you are an electrician, do not only be satisfied with your qualification. Try to gain more in depth expertise in this technical field of yours, to distinguish yourself from other electricians. If you are an accountant, avail yourself of in depth knowledge about bookkeeping practices by studying or reading up on subjects pertinent for your field of technical expertise. You can bluff your way during interviews, but once you have been appointed, people expect from you to perform. This is where the cookie crumbles or you succeed. The point is you must not only perform at an average level, but you must display exceptional or above average expertise, so that others can start to rely on your opinions and advice. 2. Produce accurate work. Cultivate a habit to carry out your work correctly with a minimum of mistakes. Sloppiness or tardiness must definitely not be present in your attitude, personal appearance or any of your work outputs, be it notes, memos, letters, spreadsheets, conversations or anything related to your work. Imagine what will happen if debits and credits are being processed the wrong way around in a financial department. It will have disastrous consequences. Strive for professionalism in what you do. 3. Be quicker than most. This is one of the best ways to demonstrate your superiority and efficiency. By executing duties and tasks speedily, you are being more productive and can entice more important tasks your way and thereby not only increase your merit ratings, but also your ultimate job rating. If you can perform your duties speedily, do not wait and stay idle, but present yourself to your superior for more work. Find a balance to be both quick and accurate. 4. Display awareness of productivity. This must start with your own self-evaluation. Ask yourself constantly if you are giving more back to the organisation in value, than what you are being paid every month. Although not easy to calculate, just thinking about it may have enough of an impact. Just imagine for a moment if your organisation were to be solely dependant for profit on the output of human beings only. In other words nothing to sell or produce but labour output. If you can do more, it reflects directly on profit. Luckily a lot of organisations have machines that make up in productivity for what is lost by unproductive employees. But being more productive in what you do as a human being, can contribute significantly to the profits of any organisation. As salaries are one of the highest cost elements in any organisation, this is one of the first cost elements that come under scrutiny during times of cost reduction efforts. You have to show your worth in order not to be included in downscaling of the labour force. But more positively, you have to show your worth to be counted in for consideration for promotion. 5. Get rid of time wasters. Arriving late for work, stretching of tea and lunch breaks and elongated private conversations on the phone, are not only wasting your valuable time, but are a reflection of your poor awareness of productivity. Private conversations on the telephone are one of the most abused methods of stealth stealing from your employer. If you cannot be trusted on the use of the telephone, what else can you be trusted with? Are you a role model for getting rid of these time wasters or for abusing it? Are you earning respect for your ethical conduct in eradicating time wasters or are you just one of the crowd? If you discipline yourself and others around you on the economical use of time, you are on your way to earn a respected leadership role. Others must detect a sense of urgency in your execution of duties to begin to respect and follow your example. Do you want to be a follower or a leader? Do you want to stay obscured in the crowd for the rest of your life or do you want to be recognised? There is such a thing as telephone ethics, you know. If you are prepared to pay for your use of the employer telephone, you are not abusing it. Do you really know what you are costing your employer for using the phone? You are not supposed to use it for private purposes in the first place. It is a privileged instrument entrusted to you to help you in your work and not to cause financial loss to you employer. 6. Be open-minded and ready for organisational changes. Whenever changes are announced, be positive and display a leadership role in executing the new policies and strategies. If you participated in the planning of the changes, then you were forewarned. But even if you experience unexpected changes, be first to look out for positive reasons for such changes and to influence others around you to accept it with positive attitudes. Defending superiors and higher management will increase your leadership status and trustworthiness. In a political sense it will display your role as siding with management against the disgruntled crowd. 7. Arrange and organise your paperwork. A good filing system allows you to retrieve required documents and information fast for own use or for use by other parties. It is a reflection of your efficiency and your ability for sound logic thinking. If you surround yourself with paperwork to impress on others how busy you are, you are making the mistake of your life. It can be interpreted in many different ways, like you cannot cope with the workload, you cannot delegate, you spend too much on time wasters, you are too slow and worst of all you cannot manage yourself or others. If you cannot get rid of papers, you will not find the time to attend to the needs and development of your subordinates. You will also not find the time to liase with colleagues or to discipline your section or department. You will be a walk over and ripe for being misused by subordinates not respecting you. Rather be a reliable source of information with the time for training your subordinates and others. Clean up your desk to make time for others. 8. Read up on the principles of supervision and management. Familiarise yourself with the knowledge on how to be a good supervisor or manager. If you can display management capabilities, you will sooner be identified for promotion. It is better to be promoted for your managerial capabilities than for your technical proficiency. It will allow you to perform your managerial duties better. Apart from being technically proficient, prepare yourself in advance for possible promotion. Make yourself ready and available for your employer and the future needs of your organisation. 9. Confidential information. Your treatment of confidential information is going to be a good gauge of your character. You only have to make one mistake in this area, not to be trusted ever again. If you have a problem in this area, rectify it quickly. Your superiors and employer have to trust and rely on your discretion with confidential information. Some information must be kept confidential or secret until it is time for disclosure. You must proof your ability for discretion with this type of information, so that they know they can trust and rely on you. Let them know and understand that you are part and parcel of management. 10. Show initiative. Make suggestions to improve methods of work and systems. See problems as opportunities for improvement. Do not just report problems, but analyse it wisely and make recommendations for improvement. Recognise opportunities for improvement and development and utilise it. 11. Be honest, open and direct. Harboring a secretive attitude of slyness with hidden agendas, will not remain a secret for long. Other persons will eventually detect it and despise you for it. You can just as well fire yourself, because that is where you will end up. Nobody will trust you after you have been exposed. Be open and direct in your communications and handling of conflict situations. Do not be afraid to air your opinions, as long as it is genuine and true. Truthful mistakes can always be remedied later on. Summary: Life is ever so short that nobody can really afford to remain average in the obscured crowd of nobodies. Make yourself stand out as someone with strong principles and work ethics, so that others can rely on your strengths. Qualifications alone, without work ethics, are totally worthless. Make the following words part of your life and your philosophy on your outlook of work: Tenacity keep on trying Conscientious keep on thinking about ways to finalise and improve your work Humorous make life bearable and enjoyable Urgency you must finalise your work with speed and accuracy Trustworthiness proof yourself to be a reliable and dependable person Openness and honesty be a person of honour and proud of yourself. How To Handle A Demotion

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Carl Mueller A demotion can be a devastating experience in your career and can be a step backwards in more ways than one. Typically, getting demoted involves a reduction in your compensation or job responsibilities, or both. The end result is that you are left in a lower position at work that is not as good as you had previously. What should you do? Before doing anything, you need to understand the reasons for this decision and how it affects your immediate tenure with the company. Certainly a demotion is a fairly public event and the people that you work with will generally be aware one way or another that you have been demoted if it involves you moving to a different (ie. lower) position that you previously held. In this regard, a demotion can be both embarrassing and de-motivating since you might start questioning your future with the company. Certainly, your long-term status with the company might be in jeopardy especially if the new job you are assigned to doesnt work out either. Depending on your specific situation a demotion might occur for several reasons such as your inability to handle the job as required, a new manager coming on board and wanting to replace you with one of their friends (this does happen!) or perhaps because the company is trying to push you out the door. In the last case, if a company wants to get rid of you but would have to pay you severance money to leave, one method an employer might use is to demote you or push you aside to a job that doesnt really have much responsibility to try to force you to look for another job or simply quit, so that they can avoid paying severance. I have heard of numerous situations where this tactic appears to be in place. Unless you are near retirement age and dont mind waiting to see if your employer blinks first and offers to pay you out, you might end up having to make a decision as to whether or not you want to remain employed with this firm. The first thing you need to do is figure out or at least try to figure out why you were demoted. If the company is trying to get rid of you by making it difficult for you to stay, they probably wont admit what theyre doing but you might have already seen the writing on the wall and already understand what is going on anyways! However, if the demotion is explained to you and the reasons for it are stated, you can take the information and figure out if its a fair decision and how you will handle it. If it is a fair decision in your mind and your demotion is warranted, it could be time to consider looking for a new job. Your career options with this company might be very limited at this point. Were you simply in the wrong position or is it possible that the employer views your contributions very lightly? Also, you should figure out how you will address the reasons that you were demoted and if training or an improvement in your skills is required, how you will achieve it. If is not a fair decision and you feel that you have been unfairly wronged, you might consider legal action or another form of complaint depending on how strongly you feel about it and what your actual options are ie. do you work for a company that offers an appeal process of some sort, is there someone in Human Resources you can speak with, etc? Before you do anything rash, take a step back and consider what you know about your demotion. Once you have all the information you need, you can make a decision that will make sense for you for the long term. I have seen cases where people who were demoted were simply in the wrong job or company and once they found a new job that was better suited to their skills, got their career back on track quickly. Planning a Church Wedding Ceremony

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Charlene Davis So, youre getting hitched?! Thats great! Congratulations! But when you come down from the clouds and hit the ground with the inevitable thud, just be prepared to take off in a sprint because girl weve got a lot to do! First things first - have you decided where youre getting married? This is the very next step you need to take early in the planning process. Outdoor weddings are always beautiful, as is someones palatial home. Maybe you could hit the boss up to donate his digs after that stinky raise he gave you. If you have a generous budget, Ive seen some beautiful weddings take place at bed and breakfast inns, or you could do something more contemporary at a hotel both of which can also accommodate your reception immediately afterwards. Of course, there is always the preferred traditional choice the church wedding ceremony. Wait a sec. Lets pause at that last word ceremony. In Websters New World Dictionary, the meaning of the word translates to, a set of formal acts proper to a special occasion, as a religious rite. In essence - a service. And since the ceremony is being held in a church, it is naturally understood to be a worship service. Although with a few of the services Ive directed, a dog-and-pony show would be a more adept description. But I wont go into any of the gory details (unless you ask me to). However, if you decide to be married in a church there are several things to be considered, such as location, dates, price (if youre not a member, they charge extra), and things like that. Most importantly, be sure to have a clear understanding about what the church policies and procedures are to make sure they will be able accommodate your plans for your special day. Most churches will have a printed form or booklet that outlines the pertinent information. After you have carefully looked it over, start asking questions. If there is something special that you want to do with the service, whether it is regarding the music, decorations, order of service, whatever - make sure that everyone is on the same wavelength you are and has a clear understanding of what youre asking. And if they nix your idea, please be gracious and accepting of whatever the churchs guidelines are for wedding protocol. Always keep in mind that a ceremony held in a church really is a worship service and you, your fianc, wedding party, and even wedding guests, should conduct yourselves accordingly and in a way that will be pleasing to God. After all, whether you are a member of that church or not, you are all guests in the House of the Lord. I wish you all the happiness in the world, and may the Lord richly bless your marriage with health, joy, love and 12 children (oops, typo!). And may you have a wilt-free wedding day! ________________________ Charlene Davis is an experienced and published writer specializing in business, retail, e-commerce, weddings, parenting, spirituality, and food. Federal PLUS Loans

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Vanessa Mchooley As a student entering college, it is very unlikely that you have a few spare checks lying around that you can cash and magically use to pay for college. Most college-aged students, ranging from late teens through mid-twenties, have no line of credit and cannot receive much money in loans if they need to do so in order to attend college. Therefore, a loan like the federal PLUS loan through the federal government and U.S. Department of Education makes it easy for you, as a potential college student, to use your parents line of credit in order to gain financing options for your higher education. How Your Parents Can Help You Apply If your parents have good credit and you obtain them a copy of the Direct PLUS loan application, you are well on your way to cracking the college books and arriving on campus in the fall. Keep in mind that in order to receive a federal PLUS loan, you must be a dependent potential undergraduate at any college or university in the U.S. You also must be planning on attending college for at least half-time during the upcoming semester. If these all apply to you, obtain a Direct PLUS loan application and promissory note, fill them out with signatures completed, and hand them in to the financial aid office at your college or university. Fill Out A FAFSA Form First! Have you tried filling out your FAFSA form yet? If not, you may already be entitled to financial aid and/or loans and scholarships that could benefit you! While it is not required for you to fill out the FAFSA form to receive a federal PLUS loan, be aware that you could receive thousands of dollars without even having to use your parents credit in the first place. Still, if you are not eligible for any other scholarships, the federal PLUS loan will enable you to receive financing for any portion of your college or university bill not covered by other financial aid (i.e. If college costs you $5000 a year and you already receive $4000 in financial aid, a PLUS loan will lend you the other $1000). Federal PLUS loans can help put you through college, even if you do not have a solid line of credit yet. This article is distributed by NextStudent. At NextStudent, we believe that getting an education is the best investment you can make, and we’re dedicated to helping you pursue your education dreams by making college funding as easy as possible. We invite you to learn more about how to get Federal Plus Loans at www.NextStudent.com . My goal is to help every student succeed - education is one of hte most important things a person can have, so I have made it my personal mission to help every student pay for their education. Japanese Decorating Ideas

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By Andrew Caxton Each Japanese garden is unique in its design, and most Japanese gardens are designed in a very singular way, but using common elements that are traditional in Japanese design. The most common elements that are considered for Japanese garden design are rock, water, plants and ornaments. In Japanese garden design, each of these serves a specific purpose. Rock is considered the foundation of the garden. In Japanese garden design, great care is taken in laying out the stones and the rest of the garden will follow this form. Tall, vertical stones may be used, or long stones may be laid on their sides, arching stone pillars and reclining rocks are all used to contribute to the design. Then stepping stones and rock pathways are formed. Since these rocks have meaning in traditional Japanese garden design, the placement of each stone and rock is crucial. But we may just place them where they look best. Water is another critical element of the design of the garden. It may really be water, such as a pond or a waterfall, or it may just be suggestive of water, such as stones raked in such a way as to resembel a stream. If you use real water running the water over surfaces such as stone, will add a peaceful sound, and create serenity. The Japanese view water as symbolic of time passing, so it is an important feature of a contemplative garden. The actual plants in a Japanese garden are secondary to the importance of stone in the garden. But they are crucial to the design and must complement it. They must harmonize with the stone and their placement must be well thought out to do so. Bamboo and Japanese maples are often used, but the kind of plant you use is not as critical as the harmonious placement. Some easy to use and place plants are ornamental grasses, evergreens and many deciduous trees. The next element is ornamentation. Ornaments are not focal points, but merely serve to enhance the critical elements of the garden such as rock and water. Therefore, they are strategically placed to accent a bridge, a stream or a stone in the garden. You will find lanterns, shallow basins or small sculptures in the garden. A Japanese garden will be situated as to take advantage of surrounding features. For instance, an opening in a gate may frame a distant tree or mountain, or a stone stream may be placed to appear as if it is meandering off into a faraway shore. How One Christian’s Blog Reads Without Any Smileys

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Russ Miles Gosh, Russ, it’s been over two months since we’ve posted a blog. Oh, My God, Rascal. I had no idea. Don’t say that, Russ! You’ll get us into trouble. Rascal is not God. Jehovah God is the only true God. ‘(NASB) Deuteronomy 32:16 “They made Him jealous with strange gods; With abominations they provoked Him to anger.’ I’m sorry, Rascal. That was just an exemplifying expression. Watch your mouth, Russ. Or you’ll get us into this deeper. ‘(CEV) Exodus 20:7 Do not misuse my name. I am the LORD your God, and I will punish anyone who misuses my name.’ WOW, Rascal! I never thought… Russ, you need to begin thinking before you speak. ‘(Darby) 1 Peter 3:10 For he that will love life and see good days, let him cause his tongue to cease from evil and his lips that they speak no guile.’ Thank you, Rascal. But the scripture says, ‘(CEV) James 3:8 But our tongues get out of control. They are restless and evil, and always spreading deadly poison.’ And another translation says, ‘(NKJV) James 3:8 But no man can tame the tongue. [It is] an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.’ That is correct, Russ. But God is not a man. ‘(CEV) Numbers 23:19 God is no mere human! He doesn’t tell lies or change his mind. God always keeps his promises.’ He is God. Via His Holy Spirit, He can tame our tongues. Well, Rascal, I guess that I need The Tongue Tamer? You’ve always said that “We get what we say.” God’s Holy Scriptures say that, Russ. ‘(NASB) Job 8:21 “He will yet fill your mouth with laughter And your lips with shouting.’ ‘ (NASB) Jeremiah 1:9 Then the LORD stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me, “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.’ ‘(NASB) Ecclesiastes 5:6 Do not let your speech cause you to sin and do not say in the presence of the messenger of God that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry on account of your voice and destroy the work of your hands?’ And God says that we get what we say, I guess, huh Rascal? Indeed He does, Russ. ‘Mark 11:22 Jesus told his disciples: Have faith in God! 23 If you have faith in God and don’t doubt, you can tell this mountain to get up and jump into the sea, and it will. 24 Everything you ask for in prayer will be yours, if you only have faith.’ WOW! That’s AWESOME, Rascal! Jesus even said that our words carry with them a more awesome power, Russ. ‘(KJV) Matthew 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’ Well, that works for you, Rascal. You’re “An Apostle.” It works for everyone, Russ, that is operating within The Lord’s perfect or permissive will. And it is “WE” that is “An Apostle of The Lord.” We are one. Remember? Well, Rascal, my better half - some well meaning folks say we shouldn’t be preaching a “Prosperity with Health & Healing Gospel.” People get upset. Yes, Russ, some people sure do. LOL. They can’t accept that “The Good News” is THAT good. Jesus said, ‘(CEV) John 10:10 A thief comes only to rob, kill, and destroy. I came so that everyone would have life, and have it in its fullest.’ Some highly thought of people say that we have a demon, Rascal. Those same types of devil deceived people said the same thing about Jesus, Our Lord, Russ. ‘(NASB) John 10:20 Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and is insane. Why do you listen to Him?” We should be happy, Russ, when we are mistreated like Our Savior was.(’CEV) Luke 6:22 God will bless you when others hate you and won’t have anything to do with you. God will bless you when people insult you and say cruel things about you, all because you are a follower of the Son of Man.’ Well, Rascal, we certainly have been blessed since we last posted a blog. If we are going to have time to write and submit any more of “Our Lord’s Inspired” ezine articles or post other important things onto Jesus4You.ws or MilesBooks.com, we need to wrap this blog up. People that are interested in what we’ve been saying will just have to venture more deeply into the many sections of our websites. I want to listen again to the new Kris Kristofferson video release that we’ve just posted into our “Activist Issues” section. I love it. Good Idea, Russ. Let’How s leave our blog readers with the clear Contemporary English Version translation of one our friend and fellow apostle, Paul’s, letter to other gentile believers: ‘(CEV) Romans 10:1 Dear friends, my greatest wish and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. 2 I know they love God, but they don’t understand 3 what makes people acceptable to him. So they refuse to trust God, and they try to be acceptable by obeying the Law. 4 But Christ makes the Law no longer necessary for those who become acceptable to God by faith. 5 Moses said that a person could become acceptable to God by obeying the Law. He did this when he wrote, “If you want to live, you must do all that the Law commands.” 6 But people whose faith makes them acceptable to God will never ask, “Who will go up to heaven to bring Christ down?” 7 Neither will they ask, “Who will go down into the world of the dead to raise him to life?” 8 All who are acceptable because of their faith simply say, “The message is as near as your mouth or your heart.” And this is the same message we preach about faith. 9 So you will be saved, if you honestly say, “Jesus is Lord,” and if you believe with all your heart that God raised him from death. 10 God will accept you and save you, if you truly believe this and tell it to others. 11 The Scriptures say that no one who has faith will be disappointed, 12 no matter if that person is a Jew or a Gentile. There is only one Lord, and he is generous to everyone who asks for his help. 13 All who call out to the Lord will be saved. 14 How can people have faith in the Lord and ask him to save them, if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear, unless someone tells them? 15 And how can anyone tell them without being sent by the Lord? The Scriptures say it is a beautiful sight to see even the feet of someone coming to preach the good news. 16 Yet not everyone has believed the message. For example, the prophet Isaiah asked, “Lord, has anyone believed what we said?” 17 No one can have faith without hearing the message about Christ. 18 But am I saying that the people of Israel did not hear? No, I am not! The Scriptures say, “The message was told everywhere on earth. It was announced all over the world.” 19 Did the people of Israel understand or not? Moses answered this question when he told that the Lord had said, “I will make Israel jealous of people who are a nation of nobodies. I will make them angry at people who don’t understand a thing.” 20 Isaiah was fearless enough to tell that the Lord had said, “I was found by people who were not looking for me. I appeared to the ones who were not asking about me.” 21 And Isaiah said about the people of Israel, “All day long the Lord has reached out to people who are stubborn and refuse to obey.” RASCAL RUSS MILES IS AN APOSTLE. Chosen by The Lord, in the Apostolic Order of Apostle, Paul, Rascal says, I Am The Lord’s Playfully Mischievous Apostle. Quartzsite, AZ

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Lance Winslow For a Desert Town on a lone highway in the middle of nowhere, Quartzsite, AZ has a lot going for it. We have been watching that towns expansion for about 5-years now. And we wish to thank the former Mayor of Quartzsite for agreeing to meet with us. We would also like to thank The Executive Director of the Quartzsite Chamber, Tina Positano for meeting with us in November of 2001. http://www.quartzsitechamber.com We congratulate the City of Quartzsite for their article in National Geographic for their several page full color article in the January 2001 issue. Although Quartzsite only has 2300 year round residences it boosts over 1 million snow birds, who come with motor homes and small cars they tow. Quartzsite has no banks, but many ATM machines at its 2 big truck stops and 2 little mom and pop stops. This is where the census leaves off and our real world knowledge picks up. We discussed the incredible influx of snowbirds to warmer states from Canada and Northern US states. Well here is a perfect example of a city, which appears to not be a very good location for a business, yet has 1 million population for 5 months out of the year, the same four-five months that many cities with high energy costs and temperatures with wind chill factor of minus zero for weeks on end. I would urge all marketing executives to look for such anomalies such as the City of Quartzsite, AZ when determining the best locations for your companys business expansion. It pays to not always rely on demographic data or census data, or any data for that matter. If you really want to know, you have to go and take a look you see? Consider all this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. By Tyler Benson Family for and individual is a multiplied self, says the saying, one cant but agree with. A family is the first social group where you grow up and learn the simplest things. So the influence of it makes the first step in formation of a personality. It is hard to see, how negative can this influence be. In the twenty first century it seems as if there are no problems inside the social group and everything goes fine but when you hear about numerous accidents that happen in ones household your hair starts rising from a thought: How could mother nature possibly create such a monster? Family violence is not a surprising fact today and sometimes people even show indifference towards it. As soon as it wont happen to them they dont care, but when it comes to trouble in our household, we rush to complain about everybodys indifference to your situation. The most horrifying thing about family violence is that children suffer physically and mentally most of all. In one of American schools children were asked to write a compare and contrast essay on a free topic. When the papers were turned in teacher went home taking them along. She didnt show up at work on time, she was at the deans office, crying and reading a paper of one student, who compared life in his family with the life of his friends. The case ended in the court and cruel parents were put into jail for three years each for child abuse. Im quite sure that well have to read a lot of similar compare and contrast essays if we give the task to every school in the US. Mass media is full of stories like this and that leaves us with no hope for this problem to be solved. Fortunately, we still have people who think that their duty is to help those in need. They arrange funds, create associations, and get their force into the governmental branches and into international organizations. They do a lot to correct the situation but unfortunately there is no way to see this terrible thing coming in a family. Cases of violence dont depend on social or financial status. It happens in wealthy household as well as in the family of the poor. Sometimes a conflict razes out of nothing, a trifle that makes people nervous and anxious. We can describe various situations for a very long time and make this story endless, but our main aim is to help those who have survived or observe violence in the family. First of all, you must remember that violence can be not only physical but also mental and sometimes the consequences of the last are more severe than of the first. Your role in the family doesnt matter. Just because you are a son or a mother you dont have to stand violence because of some rules that you were taught. Every person has a right to protect his/her life, it is said in every constitution and you might want to buy a one for reference. If you have experienced family violence, dont be afraid to tell about it. The quicker you do it the sooner youll get help and be safe. There is nothing to be ashamed of. In this situation you are not guilty, you are the victim, besides if you dont turn for help at once, and other members of the family may suffer. It is a sad topic to discuss, but this is a burning problem nowadays and without discussion there will be no solution. Everything comes from the genuine interest. If you are willing to help and have some suggestions, Im sure many people will be showing you gratitude. Tyler Benson is a senior writer of BestEssays.com - Essay writing service. Five Tips To Make Adjusting To College Easier

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Chris Stout College is a transition. Its the beginning of a new stage of life, and its challenging. Living away from home for the first time will take some getting used to, but youll settle in sooner than you think. Here are five tips to make adjusting to college a little bit easier: 1. Learn how to cook something - anything! If youre culinarily challenged, you need to find a staple food, and figure out how to prepare it. Grumbles in the tummy need to addressed. You cant just fuel your body with booze and junk food, you need to learn how to prepare healthy, balanced meals. Find a local hippie store and stock up on some all-natural and organic ingredients. Find a local deli and bakery and do the whole European open-sandwich thing. Eat falafels, Chinese food or barbeque in your backyard. Eat balanced meals often, youll need the constant supply of energy. 2. Dont be a hermit, but dont party too hard. You cant just hole up in your room, but sometimes you have to. Make yourself available for social gatherings, shindigs, fiestas and so forth, just be sure that you know when to hit the books. Time management is a critical part of the college experience. 3. Do your work already. Classes will be much less difficult if you keep up with your homework. Do your assignments when youre supposed to, so that you can participate in class discussions and follow your lectures with interest. If youve already introduced yourself to the material, then itll be a whole lot easier to build on your informed foundation. 4. Review your notes after lecture so that you can retain the info that youve just been exposed to. Your goal isnt a grade. Your goal is long-term retention of interesting and useful information. Take award-winning notes and review them right after your lecture. If you just sit and pay attention, youll do just fine, but if you have a written record of your classes, and you review this record constantly, you will remember the info for quite a long time. 5. Keep in touch with the people you love, always. Just because you live away from home doesnt mean you need to sever all ties with your old network of friends and family. Pick up the phone, write an email or make a weekend visit. Dont lose touch with the people you care about, when you go back home, youll be happy that you didnt. Theres never a good excuse for losing contact with someone you care about. The adjustment period exists, but youll be over it before you know it. Learn to cook. Get out and about, but do your work. Take better notes than anyone else, and review them often. If you miss people, call them. The more you focus on taking care of business, youll automatically adjust to your new surroundings. Handmade Soap Facts

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Yvonne Takhtalian How many people know what soap really is? Several of the cleansing bars that you buy at the store, for example, are detergents-and not soaps at all. They are called syndet bars, or synthetic detergent bars. They are made from synthesized chemicals and are usually much harsher than soap. Detergents contain petroleum distillates rather than oil. On the other hand, true soap is made from natural oils (such as olive, coconut and palm) and is a gentle cleansing product more appropriate for use on skin than is detergent. Soaps, unlike detergents, are made by combining sodium hydroxide or lye, oils and water in a process known as “Saponification”. Some people may question the use of lye in handcrafted soap. The fact is that all soap is made with lye. What needs to be made clear is that once the process of saponification is complete, the lye and oil molecules have combined and chemically changed into soap and glycerin. There is no lye present in the finished bars of soap. The oils in our soaps are put there for a specific purpose. The coconut oil creates a wonderful lather. The olive oil is used for a high quality, long lasting bar. Canola and Palm oil carry nutrients to the skin, and the safflower oil make a creamy bar. Glycerin is a skin soothing emollient that adds to the goodness of handmade soap. In commercial soaps the glycerin is removed for sale to the cosmetic industry to sell separately, sometimes at a higher price than the soap itself! Glycerin is important to skin care because it is a humectant. Humectants draw moisture from the air, which in turn moisturize your skin. A whole 1/5 of a bar of our soap is glycerin. Most soaps have artificial ingredients to scent or color. Some handcrafted soap is scented with fragrance oils. These are synthetic chemicals that are mixed together to imitate a particular scent. They have contributed in many cases to chemical sensitivity in some people. They also have no aromatherapy benefits. The scents in our soaps should come only from essential oils, which are steamed or pressed from plants. Essential oils are the fragrance emitting components of plants and are at the heart of aromatherapy. Not only do they smell good; they have many beneficial effects on the body, mind and spirit. The coloring in our soap should come from nature as well. The petals of Lavender and Rose can be used. Earth Pigments can also be used, which are simply finely ground rocks. This makes the colors rich and earthy, rather than artificial looking.
