By Rien Vidad We all have had a hard time with weight loss. It is something that most of us will struggle through, but with a little help and determination we can beat the battle of the bulge. I have been where you have been, gone through the ups and downs only to come out more knowledgable. I hope in this article I can show you that it is not all about running on the treadmill or jogging for miles. You can take simple steps to help control or reduce your weight. 1.) Start eating Breakfast. I know that this sounds like common sense, but you know the saying…”Common Sense is sometimes not so common.” For the life of me I could never figure out why I was eating so much, so late at night. I would eat dinner and then find myself stuffing myself with more food as the night went on. I remember being in college and raiding the vending machine at midnight for cookies and chips. Feeding my face with anything and everything I could get my hands on. At the same time I was not eating my first meal until about noon. I never put the two together. When you think about it logically, you are fasting for 12 hours. That was the reason for my late night binges. From midnight until noon I would not eat anything. Think about that for a bit. Have you ever skipped lunch and dinner? I am sure you have. Remember how hungry you were? I am sure you do. Now think about doing that everyday, not eating for 12 hours on a regular basis. Once I started eating breakfast I stopped having those late night binges. I sometimes would eat late at night, but not nearly the amount I used to. 2.) Stop eating out so often. I can guarantee that you will see a difference not only in your weight, but also in your pocketbook. How many of you actually know the nutritional content in a cup of coffee? How about in a greasy fried hashbrown? How much fat is in that breakfast sandwich? Most of us don’t know and I venture to guess that we don’t want to know either. A lot of food that we consume when we are out are sauted in butter, fried in oil or baked with tons of sugar. While it does taste good, it keeps us coming back and keeps the weight coming as well. When we prepare our own meals we can monitor what goes into it. Instead of frying something in oil we can try an alternative such as non-fat cooking spray or instead of tons of salt we can try another seasoning. By preparing our meals we can give our body what it needs and less of what it wants. If you work all day, taking a little extra time the night before to pack your meals can pay off greatly. Not only on your health, but your finances as well. Lets add this up, lets say that you have fast food for breakfast and lunch 3 days a week. I am guessing $3.50 for breakfast and $6.00 for lunch, now that’s being conservative, we all now that that it could be a lot higher. That’s 3 times $3.50 and 3 times 6.00 = $28.50. Now let’s look at this grocery bill, lets say we get some fruit such as bananas and breakfast bars that would be about $5.00, a loaf of bread and a package of turkey breast sandwich meat and some carrot sticks for lunch would run about $9.00. Those groceries alone would last you a week for breakfast and lunch, would be a lot healthier and would be half of what you were spending eating out not to mention half the calories and fat as well. Now do the math for your own situation. We live in a great country, everything becomes convenient for us, even gaining weight. We can have food delivered to us, we can go to a restaurant and order without leaving our cars, but if you take a little extra effort and time you can be well on the way to a healthier and lighter you. 3.) Make a better choice when you do eat out. I know what it is like when we are busy, sometimes we don’t have the kind of time we would like to prepare something. I know the feeling. So what I propose you do is to make the better choice. With the fast food industry getting sued left and right for “helping” others gain weight as well many other afflictions that come with obesity, a lot of places are offering healthy alternatives. I love places like these. Instead of a burger you can get a grilled chicken sandwich, instead of fries you can get low fat or baked chips, instead of a soda you can get juice or water, instead of a side high in fat we can get choose steamed vegetables. Taking a common sense approach, we can make the better, healthier choice when we eat out. 4.) Start eating more frequently, don’t wait to get hungry. What? You want me to eat more meals? I thought this article was about losing weight. Yes it is. If you are like the typical person, I bet you probably eat 2-3 large meals a day. And I do mean LARGE. A lot of people I talk to hit the drive throughs pretty early on the way to work. It is so easy, convenient and cheap. You can get some coffee, a breakfast sandwich and a side for just a few dollars. All of this adds up in excess fat, sugar and calories. Of which we all know where those go. I am asking that you start eating 5-6 smaller meals. As I mentioned earlier, preferably these would be meals that you prepared yourself. The body’s natural reaction when it does not get something constantly is to go into “Storage” mode. If we are eating 2 large meals a day, it will try its best not to metabolize it as quickly, on the flipside if we are eating smaller meals our body goes into “burn”mode. Our metabolism speeds up and so does our ability to lose weight. You will also find that you will not be getting those bad hunger pangs like you used to. When you are hungry you tend to overeat. Try going to the grocery store when you are hungry and see all the goofy things you end up leaving with. Eating smaller meals every few hours offsets our bodies’ tendency to overindulge when we do sit down to eat. 5.) Drink more water. Whenever I go to a restaurant I always have water instead of a soda or alcohol. It is good for me and keeps me hydrated, it also has other added benefits. When we don’t drink water regularly our bodies naturally store it. Often we carry the water weight around our bodies. When we drink water more regularly, our bodies shed that excess water weight because it knows that there will be a constant supply of it. 6.) Cut back on alcohol consumption. This one is pretty obvious. Alcohol such as beer has a lot of empty calories. It is also a diuretic which causes us to have to urinate more often. Not only can this be annoying, but it can cause us to become dehydrated. If you have ever been dehydrated before you know the fun that comes with it: Nausea, Cramps, Diarrhea. This alone would cause me to cut back. Cutting back on alcohol also will have a great affect on your health, pocketbook and waistline. I hope that this article helped. Good Luck! The Perfect Porch Swing

In his summertime classic Dandelion Wine, Ray Bradbury describes the “ritual of the front-porch swing.” “In the garage they found, dusted, and carried forth the howdah, as it were, for the quiet summer-night festivals, the swing chair which Grandpa chained to the porch-ceiling eyeletsthey sat, smiling at each other, nodding, as they swung silently back and forth, back and forth.” Perhaps it is the soothing rhythm or the reassuring creak of the porch swing that attracts us. Perhaps it is the companionable silence or quiet conversation. Or maybe swings simply remind us of more genteel times. Materials and Construction Although porch swings can be purchased in a wide range of materials, the most common are wicker and wood. You can also make your own porch swing from one of the myriad of woodworking patterns available at garden centers, hardware stores, or on the Internet. You can even improvise with a rope chair or a wicker chair with the legs cut off and a support base added. Whether you are buying or making, here are things to look for: Seat depths vary from 18 to 36 inches (50-100 cm). There is no one “correct” depth — it’s a matter of personal comfort. Chair slats should have some curve or slant to them to make a more comfortable seat, and there should be enough space between slats to allow air to circulate. Swings can hold one to three people depending on the length of the seat. Of course, the bigger the swing, the heavier the load and the sturdier the supports need to be. Swings with additional length-wise supports under the chair slats will be sturdier and will swing more evenly. All joints should be bolted or screwed together, not nailed. Pine, maple or oak swings will not weather as well as cedar or teak, but can be painted with an exterior paint to extend their life. They also suit a sheltered porch area. Wooden bench backs come in a variety of styles. Back slats can run horizontally, vertically with a topper or even vertically at differing heights to form a “round” back. Some styles will suit certain homes better than others. Seat cushions, covered in durable outdoor fabrics, can adapt a swing to just about any architectural or decorating style, and also make the swing more comfortable for whiling away those summer evening. Installation Allow a 4 foot (1.2 m) arc for the swing to move freely. Use galvanized or stainless steel chain or marine-grade braided nylon or polyester rope, and eye-bolts or S-hooks with 4-6 inch (10 cm-15) shafts. Using S-hooks allows easier removal of the swing for winter storage but is not as secure as using eye-bolts. ALWAYS hang the swing from a roof joist, not the roofing material itself. If the joists on your porch roof are not exposed, cut away a section of roofing to find them. Otherwise, don’t hang the swing from the ceiling — use a frame instead. Drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the shaft of the eye-ring or S-ring. This will ensure a snug fit to the shaft of the ring. Tighten the ring securely, using pliers or a screw-driver for the last turn. Measure the required chain. As an example, seven foot (2.1 m) chains hung from a beam 8 feet (2.4 m) above the floor will lift a swing about 18 inches (45 cm) off the ground. If you have a measurement, your hardware dealer can cut the exact length of chain you need and you won’t have to cut it with a hacksaw. Use four chains to hang your swing — two chains from each hook, one to the front of the swing and one to the back. It’s easier to hang swings with holes in the arms, but swings with chains attached to the seat or to the bottom supports give a more comfortable ride without as much twisting and wearing of the chains or the ropes. Check your swing each spring and replace any rusted chain or bolts. Also maintain the finish of the wood because weathered wood eventually will loosen fasteners and produce splinters. No porch? Don’t despair if you don’t have a covered porch. Some swings come suspended in their own frames or can be installed on decks on a wooden A-frame. Put one in your garden, hanging from an arbor. Train vines up the sides and soon you’ll have a leafy hide-away nook. Hang a board with rope from a sturdy, level tree branch If you need something that takes up less space, consider a glider — a bench that gently moves forward and back on a mechanized base. By Tania Penwell A great many of my friends have been asking me to share the secret of making a scented candle at home, though I tell them repeatedly that it is no great secret. Any web site or online manual can teach you the basics of making scented candles at home, and once you have mastered those, the rest is up to your imagination and creativity. Both these qualities, I have found, increase with experience, and never mind what they say about inborn creativity and genius. However, since it does appear that plenty of people want to know just what it is that causes my candles to smell so good, I will begin by saying that the process of making a candle with the aroma of your choice is a simple one. As I have said before, the increasing demand for scented candles has caused a lot of enterprising folks to come up with books, magazines and web sites dedicated to the art of candle making. To begin with, you need the right equipment, though that may seem obvious. I always stress this point because, despite its simplicity, candle making is easy only when you follow instructions correctly. Otherwise, you will find that it can be darned tricky as well! So, depending on whether you are making a wax or gel candle, you will need enough of it, plus the cooking equipment, or the equipment needed to melt the wax and mould it. And obviously, you will need the essential oils that will give you the aroma of your choice. In my experience, I have always found it best to combine at least a couple of aromas, though beginners might find it easier to stick to one fragrance initially. What a beginner definitely should not do is pack the candle with as much fragrance as possible. Most ordinary scented candles contain about 0.5 oz of essential oil, though if you want to intensify the fragrance, you may increase it to one whole ounce. However, any more and the scent that your candle gives will be unbearable, probably making you sick! A lot of people confess to being intrigued by the scents that I use for my candles. I just cant place it, but it smells so good, is something that I hear all the time. Shall I tell you why? Well, I tend to experiment with the most unlikely combinations, most often based purely on instinct, and end up with a fragrance that is marvelous yet unidentifiable! For instance, the first time I used rose and cinnamon together, I was convinced I was headed for disaster. As it turned out, it became my most popular aroma! Similarly, I combined clove and iris to produce another well-appreciated fragrance. The point is, dear reader, it is largely up to you what fragrance you produce. Finally, though I stuck to wax candles for a long time, I do believe that soy candles hold the scent much better than wax, and they also burn longer. The process of melting the soy wax is similar to that of ordinary wax, though you will probably need a double boiler. You add the color and scent as usual, and pour it into the mold of your choice. As you probably know, a staggering variety of molds are available in the market today. Who Will Buy SCO?

By Guy Smith For the last year I have monitored the declining financial condition of SCO as they bleed away cash on both ill-advised litigation and ill-conceived products. In the past week various news organizations have belatedly followed my lead, speculating on when SCO’s death knell will sound. Given the financial inevitability of SCO’s demise, the more interesting question is “who might buy SCO?” Lord knows SCO is a cheap stock, running just north of a buck per share this afternoon and facing delisting if it sinks much further. With a market cap of a measly $23M, any one of a number of players could gobble it up in an instant. If there is any meat on SCO’s bones, it may be a race to see which vulture picks the carcass clean. So who would buy this corpse, and to what end? On the chessboard of marketing, there are some interesting gambits. Red Hat - The King: The recent (un)holy alliance between Novell and Microsoft, with their unwritten threats of litigation against other Linux distributions and developers, gives Red Hat motive. SCO claims copyrights to much of the UNIX foundation, and hence to (allegedly) much of Linux. If Red Hat were slick and fast, they could procure SCO, liberate the copyrights, publish and mirror the key information, and throw Novell and Microsoft’s newfound advantage into a meat grinder. There are legal dangers therein, but this litigious front is so littered now that this action would take years to resolve, and in the mean time earn Red Hat top honors among Open Source advocates around the globe. Fast shuffle this plan through any of the non-profit (and hence expendable) Open Source organization, and it might be a risk-free adventure. Novell - The Queen: Novell has a vested interest in acquiring SCO and any supposed claims they have to UNIX. By bringing home what was once entirely theirs, Novell would multiply the leverage they already possess and make the Novell/Microsoft F.U.D. machine even more fearsome. This one trick might well knock a leg out from under Red Hat, and make Larry Ellison wince. Oracle - The Rook: Ellison knows a gambit when he sees one, and is not shy when it comes to using the courts to push an issue (as he did by going up against the FTC during his Peoplesoft plunder). Larry now has a vested interest in keeping Red Hat propped-up, especially since the Novell/Microsoft pairing is beginning to show serious traction. Since Larry wants to make money from Red Hat’s work, and keep Microsoft on the server-side decline, he must slow any progress Novell makes in the Linux market. “Owning” some rights to UNIX/Linux gives him a means to that end. IBM - The Knight: Since IBM is now the champion of all things Open, they may chose to be a white knight. IBM could buy SCO from petty cash, and publicly indemnify anyone contributing to Linux by holding alleged title to SCO intellectual property. This helps keep the Linux market competitive by maintaining equality between two main vendors. By Shauna Hanus Cheeses come in a wide variety of flavors, textures, and types. Gone are the days of un-wrapping a slice of American cheese placing it on white bread and calling it a meal. Todays specialty markets make it easy to serve gourmet cheeses as an appetizer, desert, or as a simple course in a larger meal. When serving cheese never serve more than 5 varieties at a time. Vary the size, shape, flavor and texture of the choices to add interest to the selection. The tray you serve on should be a wooden board or marble slab. A silver tray with a wood insert can add elegance and glamour for a special touch. The tray should never be crowded, and any bread or fancy crackers should be served separately. Separate utensils and trays should be used if the cheeses have strong or distinctive flavors. Mild varieties will pick up the flavors and aromas of stronger cheese. Coupling the cheese with fresh fruit or thin sliced onions gives added interest and texture and makes for an appetizing arrangement. Always remember to slice all the accompaniments in bite size pieces. Cheeses can be served as a very elegant desert a light course after the entre or as an appetizer. When using cheese as an appetizer, choose a light meal because cheese can be filling. The temperature of your cheese will make a difference in how it taste. When served at room temperature cheese displays more of its natural flavors and characteristics. By leaving the cheese out for 30 minutes before serving the cheese will reach its optimum temperature. For the Love of Butterflies

By Jodi Hopper Have you ever gone for a walk in the woods and touched a plant only to get an extreme itching, burning sensation. It can be quite painful. Congratulations, you have come into contact with Urtica dioica or otherwise known as Stinging Nettle. Growing up, we always called it Itch Weed. It looks innocent enough, but it has lots of little stinging hairs, that contain formic acid, histamine, acetylcholine, and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) that will cause this stinging and burning sensation. This sensation can last up to 24 hours, depending upon the sensitivity of the person. This plant can be found all across the United States. If left unchecked, the plant spreads by seeds and by its rhizome roots and can grow into rather large patches. Now you may ask why anyone would ever want to consider planting such a weed. It does not produce pretty flowers, so it cant attract anything worthwhile, right? No, this isnt true. I once thought of this plant as a terrible nuisance. Eradicate it from my property. I took much pleasure from cleaning it out of my fence rows and next to my out buildings. But one year, I was busier than most and let a patch grow in my field. Later that summer, I found lots of caterpillars on it and that is when I found that Stinging Nettles are a host plant for several butterflies. One butterfly, the Milbert Torteshell, uses Stinging Nettles as their sole host plant for their caterpillars. This is a delightful butterfly and one that I have become quite fond of. Nettles are also the host plant for Red Admirals, Painted Ladies, West Coast Ladies, Satyr Anglewing and Commas. If you dont know what a host plant is, that is a plant that a caterpillar eats to survive on. Some caterpillars have several host plants, others have only one. Locating the caterpillars on the leaves is not hard. All you need to do is look for leaves that are closed in half, from side to side. It is amazing to watch a caterpillar the size of hair, weave these leaves closed. They take a fine silk and carefully lace the leaf closed. After the leaf is closed about them, they then will eat inside of the enclosure. This is to protect them from predators. But it only protects them to a certain extent. Spiders crawl inside to snack on the caterpillars. I have watched wasps peruse up and down the plants, looking for caterpillars. One butterfly may lay several hundred eggs, but only about 2% of the eggs will survive to become adult butterflies. If you do decide to introduce this plant onto your property, plant it somewhere that you are not likely to come into contact with it much. If you are able to mow around it on a regular basis, this will keep if from spreading. It grows best in nitrogen rich soil. I find that my butterflies like to lay eggs on the patches that are in the afternoon sun. You do not find as many caterpillars on the patches that are located in the shade during the afternoon. I have found that with practice and much care, you are able to touch this plant without getting stung. If you do get stung, it is said that you can crush jewelweed, plantain, or dock, over the area to alleviate the pain. On my research of this plant, I found that it is reported to have many other benefits. You are able to eat it and drink it. There is a recipe for Nettle Pudding and you can make a Nettle Tea. What are the benefits to eating or drinking this? Stinging Nettles have high levels of minerals, including a trace of iron, and it has more protein than any other vegetable. One person wrote that when they felt tired, run down, or irritable, that the tea was good for rebuilding the system. He also went on to say that it makes your hair brighter, thicker, and shinier and your skin clearer and healthier (good for eczema and other skin conditions). I even read that it is recommended for weight loss, but they went on to say that you may lose more water than weight. Not sure you want to put this stinging plant inside your mouth? There are plenty of uses for this plant other than eating or drinking it. You can make hair tonics, facial steams and rinses, and nettle tea compresses are good for wounds, cuts, burns or stings. And I have heard that it can relieve arthritis. Soaking the leaves overnight in water, then using this as a spray is supposed to be a good pesticide for aphids or spider mites. And using the Nettle Tea to feed your plant reportedly helps them to grow. I am not sure I am brave enough to eat it or drink nettle yet. Maybe I will have my family in and make a new recipe, only to announce what was in it after they have finished. Or maybe I will wait to see if their hair and complexion improves, then try it myself. I am curious to see if it will work as a pesticide and also boost my plants growth, but I do know for one thing, the regardless of whether it will give me shiny hair or cure what ails me, it will always have a spot on my property, just for the butterflies. How Much Time Did You Waste in Your Relationship?

While in the relationship you are so determined to have things work out the way you want, that time wasnt even an issue. We approach this relentless pursuit of trying to right what is wrong so diligently, that we lose track of time. We are so consumed with making things work that we refuse to admit the truth, and in turn we keep hanging in there. Its when we look back and can clearly see there was a point that our heartfelt attempts were in vain that the remorse of time wasted begins to set in. Ultimately, the outcome was the same whether we waited another year or two, or ten. Butnow that you can see the light, its time to put the past behind you, cut your losses and dont waste another precious minute regretting what you cant do a thing about now. Many people continue lamenting this loss of time so long that it becomes a self-imposed prison. Why do you want to go over and over in your mind what was, what couldve been and how bad you feel about what happened? What is your point? The best thing you can do is to accept the fact that its over, and start right this minute to begin putting it behind you. All of the fretting, regret and introspection doesnt help, it hurts you. There is no benefit to re-living the past over and over again wishing things wouldve worked out differently. Youve already wasted months or perhaps years hoping and wishingto no avail. As difficult as it may be, now is the time to face the reality that you need to move on. Letting go of the past comes with timejust make sure that when you let go, you let go of all of it. There are times in life when things simply dont work out the way we want. Its just the way it goes. But, ultimately you have to get your head on straight and understand the negative impact of holding on to something thats over. If you continue to focus on your remorse and disappointment, how do you expect to feel? Every time you catch yourself feeling bad, use your feelings as an indication that what you are telling yourself about this situation is what is keeping you stuck. Stop yourself and begin to focus on what you want your future to look like from this point forward. Project yourself living your life filled with love, wealth, health and all that you desire. Theres a whole world out there waiting for you. Dont hold onto the past. Venture forward. Its out thereyou just have to stop wasting any more of your time and go after it.
