Virtual Assistance: What Every Sole Practitioner Should Know

April 26th, 2008 by glorianemcmurray

By Andrea Cannavina Ever increasing numbers of attorneys hanging out their own shingle are in dire need of administrative assistance, but do not have the space, equipment or even workload to warrant hiring an employee. Many are forced to spend hours each day on the administrative duties required to keep their practice in business. While you may enjoy having total control, there is only so much time in a day. Fortunately, a better solution is available in a little known industry which is taking the business world by storm: virtual assistance. What is a VA? Virtual Assistants or VAs are business owners who provide administrative and other services virtually –through the use of electronic communications (telephone, e-mail, fax and instant messaging, couriers and US mail). Professional VAs accomplish assigned tasks from their own well equipped office, have years of experience in their chosen field, and are considered contract vendors and not employees thereby eliminating the expense, hidden costs and headaches inherent in the employer/employee relationship. While you can locate a VA for almost any service imaginable, common administrative duties performed by VAs include word processing, desktop publishing, contact and calendar management, accounting/billing, reception and travel arrangements. Where Can I Find a VA? There are several VA industry organizations which maintain directories of VAs based on certifications, skill sets and specialties. One such organization is the International Virtual Assistants Association (www.ivaa.org). The IVAA maintains a free RFP (Request For Proposal) service for business owners to post their needs and receive responses from eligible members via e-mail. The Devil is in the Details: Before deciding on a VA, you need to determine what you want them to do. Start with a list of duties you do not like doing, you are not properly trained to do, or projects you never seem to be able to get to. Better still, write down on your calendar or in a separate pad, each duty you perform for one week. This will give you a framework to decide what you wish to keep in house (i.e., accounting) and what you wish to outsource (i.e., typing). Since every VA is an independent business owner, the methods for transfer of work, availability of services, and costs vary. Rates range from as little as $25 to $100 per hour or more based on the services provided and experience of your VA. Do not let what appears to be a high rate deter you a good VA has systems in place to help their niche market and therefore gets things done fast certainly much faster than you! Additionally, since you are only charged for the time spent actively working on your projects, an experienced VA is very cost effective. In many instances a VA becomes a strategic partner of their clients business, offering suggestions for improvement of processes, methodologies for workflow, options for increasing revenue, as well as access to their network of contacts within the growing VA industry itself. Once you have found a VA to work with, it is imperative that you sign a contract specifying that the nature of the relationship, types of services to be provided, deadlines/project parameters, costs, and any other details. This is to avoid potential misunderstandings, as well as confirm that the relationship is of an independent contractor nature. In short, if you are tired of taking care of the administrative aspect of your practice, want to explore taking your business to the next level or simply could use a hand on occasion with a large or specialty project, consider hiring a VA. How To Lose Fat

April 24th, 2008 by glorianemcmurray

By Brian Kaye Yes I know its beach season and youre still caring around some extra unwanted weight. Fat is unwanted by many and can be such a pain to get rid of. But there is no need to worry I have some answers that could help you with losing fat. When losing fat you want to start off with setting a goal for yourself. When setting this goal you want to keep it realistic. If your one hundred pounds overweight then dont set a goal to lose one hundred pounds in six weeks that is just unrealistic. Losing fat is going to take a lot of discipline and time. Your goal should be to lose at least 1-2 pounds per week. Try to make your first real goal to lose between five and ten pounds in one month. The next step is diet. Now I know a lot of people run when they here the word diet but dont be scared a diet is simply what you eat. Not all diets consist of just salads, water, bread, and crackers. Matter of fact when youre dieting to lose weight you can still eat a lot of the foods you enjoy. The only kinds of foods you want to watch out for is foods really high in sugar, saturated fat, and trans fat. This would include doughnuts, cookies, cake, ice cream, candy, pizza, fried foods, and any kind of fast foods. Although you dont want to avoid sugar completely you should stay away from a diet high in sugar. The sugar you want to be getting in your diet should be from fresh fruits and all natural juices. Now that we got sugar and fat out of the way the next thing in your diet is your carbohydrates. Dont even begin to think that carbohydrates are bad for you. In fact your body requires carbohydrates just as much as water, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. Carbohydrates are essential to staying healthy and losing weight or gaining muscle. You should get your carbohydrates from pastas, cereals, breads, fruits, and vegetables. You want to keep your scale ratio of carbohydrates, protein, and fat to a 50-35-15. Now that we have that down we can talk about our last main nutrient and that is protein. Protein is the building block for your bodys growth. You should get your protein from eggs, chicken, peanuts, milk, and other dairy products. You can steak too but only on occasion because your goal is to lose weight not gain it. The next step in achieving your goal is to start exercising. Start a basic training program and work out about 3-4 times a week to keep active. Cardiovascular and aerobic activities such as swimming, running, walking, jump rope, and any kind of sport is also very essential to losing fat. You want to do these about 3-4 times a week as well to keep active and healthy. Once you have started eating right and working out then you will definitely start to notice that your weight loose goal is very possible. Our last step in losing weight is to sleep. Sleep is a must that your body needs. Your body grows and repairs itself at night so get enough sleep so you can start seeing your results right away. I would recommend 7-9 hours of sleep every night. If you dont sleep enough every night then you will stress your body and that could possibly keep you from losing weight. Also do not forget to keep track of your weight. You can record your weight in a training log that you should update every week. This is some of the best advice I could give you on losing weight. It is simple and not that hard to do it. You simply just need to discipline yourself and stay consistent with what you are doing. If you follow everything I have said here then there should be no reason for you not to lose some fat and begin to look healthy. Payday Loan Company - Compare Payday Loan Companies To Get The Lowest Rate

April 22nd, 2008 by glorianemcmurray

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Carrie_Reeder]Carrie Reeder Payday loan companies vary in the rates they charge customers. You can find low rates by comparing the offers of payday loan companies. The annual percentage rate (APR) is an easy tool to find who has the best deal. You also want to take a look at payment plans to make sure you dont get taken in by late fees. Look For The APR The APR is the cost of the cash advance for a year. Fortunately, the majority of people pay off their payday loan is less than 30 days so they dont pay such high fees. But by comparing the APR of several lenders, you can find the best deal. Most often the APR will be listed in the FAQ or How It Works section of an online payday company. If you cant find it, simply email the company with a request. By taking a few minutes to compare rates, you can save a few dollars. Finance Fees The actual cost of your loan will on average be about $15 for every $100 you borrow. A payday loan company charges the same rate to everyone since there are no credit checks. In the companys eyes, everyone has the same credit background. The only variable is your income level, which will determine in part how much you can borrow. Some online payday companies also offer a reduced finance fee for first time borrowers. You will want to make sure they have a competitive rate to begin with, but it is certainly worth checking out. Payment Plans One way payday loan companies can get you is by delaying payments. They might just debit the finance charge or a small part of your principal from your checking account. While the small charge may seem nice, you are actually adding on more financing fees for the time delay. When you apply for a cash advance, make sure you opt for the full payment on the day you get paid. Some lenders will automatically default to this plan; others will require you to call or fax your request to the company. You can always change your mind later on. Loving Your Spouse When Your Spouse is Not Loving You

April 20th, 2008 by glorianemcmurray

By Margaret Paul, Ph.D. Marlo and Jack have been married for twelve years and have two young children. Marlo and Jack each state that they love each other, yet Marlo does not feel loved by Jack, while Jack states that he is content with the relationship. In their relationship system, Marlo tends to be the caretaker, while Jack is the taker. Marlo often thinks about what would please Jack, while Jack rarely thinks about what Marlo wants or feels. What should Marlo do? Should she leave Jack, even though she loves him? Should she continue to try to get him to care about her, which has never worked? These are the questions Marlo had for me when she had a counseling session with me on the phone. Marlo was quite surprised when I told her that neither action was warranted at this time. Marlo, I said to her, there is a good possibility that the way Jack treats you is a mirror of how you treat yourself. How often do you think about what you want or feel? Not very often. I usually think more about Jack and my kids than I do about myself. I think its selfish to think about myself. I want to be loving, not selfish. Marlo was confused between selfishness and self-responsibility. Actually, in their relationship, Jack was the selfish one in expecting Marlo to give herself up to take responsibility for his feelings and needs. By not caring about her own feelings and needs, Marlo was training her children to be selfish as well. They were already learning to blame her for their feelings and expect her to give herself up for them. As soon as Jack or the children would get angry or withdraw, Marlo would feel guilty and responsible and give herself up to do what they wanted. Marlo would not know whether or not Jack really loved her until she started to love herself. What if she left him and met another man? I assured her that the same thing would eventually happen if she remained a caretaker, because people usually end up treating us the way we treat ourselves. So what do I do? asked Marlo. Im so used to taking care of everyone else. I have no idea how to take care of myself. Imagine that your feelings and needs are a small child that youve just adopted. What would you do to help her begin to feel loved? Well, I would spend time with her, and listen to her, and hold her. I would let her know that Im here and not going away. I would do lots of things to help her feel safe and loved. Exactly! I stated. This is what you need to start to do for yourself. Keep imagining that your own feelings are a small child and you are the parent of this child. You really do know how to be loving its just that youve never thought about being loving to yourself. Take all that youve learned about giving to others and now give some of it to yourself. Then we moved on to another subject. Marlo, do you have a source of spiritual guidance you turn to? Yes, she replied. Im a Christian and I turn to Jesus. Good, I said. Now you need to start asking Jesus for information regarding the loving action toward yourself. You do this by asking a question, such as, Jesus, what would the loving action be toward myself when Jack is angry with me? or What is in my highest good when my children are being demanding or disrespectful toward me? Then imagine what Jesus might say to you. You might have to make it up for awhile, but after awhile you will begin to experience that Jesus is actually answering you. You will begin to experience two-way communication between you and Jesus. Are you willing to try this? Marlo was willing. I cautioned her that Jack and her children might be upset with her for awhile, because they were used to her being a caretaker, but that if they really loved her and wanted her to be happy, they would end up supporting her in loving herself. But what if Jack just stays mad? she asked. Well, then you can decide what is in your highest good. But until you are loving to yourself, you will not know the truth about Jack. Most of the people Ive worked with have found that when they are loving to themselves long enough, their whole relationship improves. I cant guarantee it, but isnt it worth a try, rather than just giving up? Yes, I dont really want to leave Jack. Im excited about this. I finally have some hope for our relationship! How to Choose a Hairstyle When You have Dull and Damaged Hair

April 16th, 2008 by glorianemcmurray

By Jeffery Dodd If you have dull and damaged hair, choosing a new hairstyle for an image makeover is quite challenging. This is for reason that you hair many not come out looking beautiful and not what you have intended and desired it to be. Nevertheless, some know how can help you achieve a better and more appropriate hairstyle for you. Here is how: Choose a hairstyle that flaunts your hairs natural form and texture. If you have a curly hair, scrap the idea of going through hair treatments like hair rebonding and hair straightening to make your hair straight. The advent of many hairstyling processes has led to a trend in altering the hairs natural form and texture but these also result in undesirable dulling of hair, split ends and hair damage. If you are thinking about changing your hairstyle, go for a style that is most compatible with the form and texture of your hair. It does not only bring out your hairs natural beauty but also prevents further damage that can be caused by the heat and chemicals that are applied during hair altering processes. Cut your hair short when it is necessary. Many women aspire to have long hair but when you have been telling yourself about how bad your hair looks like when you are in front of the mirror or when split ends become very noticeable, you might consider cutting your hair short. This will help in eliminating dull and damaged hair ends and also helps your hair revive its health and beauty. Avoid hairstyles that can aggravate your hairs damaged condition. When choosing a hairstyle, be very sensitive to your hairs needs. This means that when your hair has become unmanageable and damaged from hair coloring, choose a hairstyle that does not necessitate applying dyes and chemicals to your hair. Similarly, avoid altering your hairs natural form when it entails chemical and heat processes that will bring more damage to your hair. You might also consider choosing a hairstyle that you can wear as is when you go to work or to a party because this will help in eliminating the use of chemicals like hairsprays that can be detrimental to the health of your hair. Choosing a new hairstyle for an image makeover will not be as challenging when you have some know how in choosing a hairstyle regardless if you have dull and damaged hair. Remember to choose a hairstyle that flaunts your hairs natural form and texture; to cut your hair short when it is necessary; and to avoid hairstyles that can aggravate your hairs damaged condition Jeffery Dodd is an accomplished writer with extensive knowledge in hairstyles. Cellular Wireless Network Handoff Protocols

April 14th, 2008 by glorianemcmurray

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=David_Chow]David Chow In cellular wireless networks, it is very important to deal with Mobile station (MS) handoff between cells so that they can maintain a continuous and QoS-guaranteed service. There are four basic types of handoff protocols; network-controlled handoff (NCHO), mobile-assisted handoff (MAHO), soft handoff (SHO), and mobile-controlled handoff (MCHO). From NCHO to MCHO, the control protocols tend to decentralize the decision making process, which help shorten handoff delays; however, meanwhile, the decentralization makes the measurement information available to make a handoff decision also decreased. Next, we briefly introduce these four types of handoff mechanisms. Network-controlled handoff NCHO is a centralized handoff protocol, in which it is network that makes handoff decision based on measurements of the signal quality of mobile station (MS) at a number of based stations (BS). Specifically, if the MS is measured to have a weaker signal in its old cell, while a stronger signal in a neighbouring cell, then a handoff decision could be made by the network to switch BS from the old cell to the new cell. Such a type of handoff in general takes 100-200 ms and produces a noticeable interruption in the conversation. However, overall delay of such a type of handoff is in general in the range of 5-10 s. Thus, this type of handoff is not suitable to a rapid changing environment and a high density of users due to the associated delay. NCHO is used in the first-generation analogue systems such as AMPS. Mobile-assisted handoff MAHO distributes the handoff decision process. It is MS makes measurements, and the Mobile switch centre (MSC) makes decisions on handoff. Compared to NCHO, this mechanism has more distributed control, thereby helping to improve the overall handoff delay, typically in the range of 1 s. Soft handoff SHO is often used in conjunction with MAHO. Rather than immediately terminating the connection between a MS and a BS. In the course of handoff, a new connection is established first between the MS and a new BS, while keeping the old connection between the MS and the old station. Only after the new connection can stably transmit data, the old connection is released. Thus, SHO is a make before break mechanism. This mechanism helps ensure the service continuity, which is however at the cost of more capacity resource consumption during the handoff (as two connections are established simultaneously). Mobile-controlled handoff In contrast to NCHO, it is MS that totally control and make decisions on handoff in the MCHO approach. A MS keeps on measuring signal strength from all the surround base station (BS)s. If the MS find that there is a new BS who has a stronger signal than that of an old BS, it may consider to handoff from the old BS to the new BS given a certain signal threshold is reached. MCHO is the highest degree of handoff decentralization, thereby enabling it to have a very fast handoff speed, typically on the order of 0.1 s. Summary We have introduced four types of handoff mechanisms that are widely used in cellular wireless networks. From centralization to decentralization, network-controlled handoff (NCHO) shows the highest centralization with the network totally controlling and making decisions on handoff, while mobile-controlled handoff (MCHO) gives full flexibility to MS to allow it to make decisions on handoff. As a result, decentralized handoff mechanisms show advantages of very fast handoff speed, while centralized mechanisms generally take much longer time. In modern cellular wireless networks, decentralized handoff mechanisms are widely applied due to their good scalability and fast handoff speeds. Migraine Treatment Has Many Faces

April 11th, 2008 by glorianemcmurray

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michelle_Bery] Michelle Bery According to the National Headache Foundation, over 28 million people suffer from migraine headaches. Migraine headaches are not your run-of-the-mill tension headache; they are much, much worse. Migraine headaches are usually intensely painful, disabling, and typically reoccurring. To make matters worse, migraine headaches often last for several days. If you are among the estimated 28 million people who suffer from this debilitating condition then you might be well served by pursuing migraine treatment. The first step in migraine treatment is seeing your physician. The doctor must be certain of the type of headache that is causing your suffering, and the symptoms alone may not be sufficient for making a confident diagnosis. Migraine treatment will likely begin with a thorough physical examination and headache evaluation. Only after other potential causes have been eliminated can you and your doctor begin to narrow your treatment options. If no causes for your migraines are evident your doctor might tell you to begin keeping a headache diary. A headache diary is used to help identify what things are migraine triggers for you. The list of migraine triggers is as varied as the people who suffer from migraines. Stress, fatigue, lack of sleep, foods or food additives, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, even bright lights; all of these things, and more, trigger migraine headaches in some people. By using a migraine diary you are more likely to identify the conditions that make a migraine possible for you. Once you have identified the sources of your migraines, you can begin working toward an effective migraine treatment. Often it is possible to curb or even eliminate your migraine headaches by strictly avoiding the foods and conditions that you have identified in your headache diary. It is possible that the use of a headache diary can be an effective, preventative, migraine treatment for some; others will need additional help that natural prevention methods can not provide. Abortive medications are taken at the moment you begin to feel the all too familiar symptoms of an impending migraine headache. However, if your headaches are exceptionally disabling or frequent more than three per month - then you may not want to wait until they start to begin taking medication. Various drugs have proven to be an effective migraine treatment. Beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants all have a demonstrated record of migraine prevention. Migraine treatment that focuses on prevention can allow frequent sufferers to reduce the amount of pain medication they are using and the side effects those medications may have. It is important to remember that none of these options for migraine treatment should be tackled alone. Like all matters involving your health and medication, it is imperative that you consult with your physician before embarking on any migraine treatment regimen. On-line Weight Watchers Diet Helper for Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and Mobile Phones

April 10th, 2008 by glorianemcmurray

By Laura Ciocan At the beginning of December, WeightWatchers.com announced the release of an application for Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and PDA mobile phones. It is the first to synchronize with a web-based account via the Internet. Mobile-phone diet applications are becoming increasingly popular. Weight Watchers diet promoters link the phone application to the Web personal account, which provides a useful portable tool for diet assistance. This makes the diet easier to follow by offering :The possibility of following your weight watch more closely, and of keeping permanent track of your eatingA points calculator and tracker. The WeightWatchers diet is based on calculating the points of foods according to a specific formula. This facility provides a ready, helpful tool. It also tracks the points allowance, daily or weekly, helping you to stay within limitsThe application includes a vast database such as 25,000 food choices, restaurants and groceries An application which updates your web account every time you enter data or calculate. The application has already gained huge popularity. Over 400,000 buyers have downloaded the application from a popular Web site selling cell-phone applications. As the popularity of low-carb diets has lost ground throughout 2004 and sales have dropped, the company behind the Atkins Diet is planning to launch a similar product for mobile phones and handheld computers on the market. The product, available at the beginning of 2005, will be so affordable that it will be within the reach of any dieter. The application is a carbohydrate counter to help dieters track the carbohydrate contents of foods, as well as their own daily carb intake. The application is a further step within the firm’s marketing policy of finding new market segments for the product — the Atkins diet — by diversifying the means of popularizing it. In this way it also diversifies the target audience. An Atkins diet DVD was put on the market and sold during the 2004-2005 holiday season. Ten Healthy Weight Loss Tips

April 7th, 2008 by glorianemcmurray

By Dulce Azogue People who are planning to go on a diet think they should not eat for 2meals a day only to pig out on steak, chocolate, and chips later in the day. Many people have fallen for it, but you’re not alone. Millions of Americans are facing a tremendous weight problem despite fitness programs and equipment made available each year. So if you are one of the hapless millions who have tried everything, here are ten simple and practical weight loss tips to help you lose weight and keep it off. 1. Eat on smaller plates. People finish what they eat - whether it’s pop corn in a supersized bowl or large bowl of ice cream, leading to excessive pounds that are only hard to get rid of later. But prevention is better than cure, they say, so avoid too much calories by eating on smaller plates or bowls, and utensils. Research shows that people are not aware of how much food they eat when they use large plates. But using smaller plates, bowls or utensils can make you full while eating less. 2. Learn portion control. People get fat because they don’t measure how much food they eat, period. I don’t suggest that you use scales and rulers, but you can use your hand and other visual representations to measure how much is enough, since “moderate” means differently to every one. For example, a deck of cards is equivalent to a 3-ounce serving. A ping pong ball is equivalent to 2 tablespoons of salad dressing. And a cup of pasta or rice is equivalent to a baseball. 3. Eat whole grains and high-fiber cereals. Replace chips and cookies with high-fiber cereals. You don’t have to deprive yourself of nutrients when going on a diet; you can gain lots of nutrients while trying to lose weight. Research shows that dieters who ate cereals high in fiber and whole grains were able to lose weight effectively while improving the quality of their diet. 4. Recognize hunger triggers. Is it real hunger, or is it just boredom? Recognize the real hunger trigger firstbefore you go look for food. If it’s just boredom, do something else. If you’restressed, talk to a friend or get a massage. 5. Mind your beverage. Another culprit to excessive pounds is that beverage that goes along with a valuemeal. For Americans, they make up 50% of daily excessive calories. Cut back on soft drinks, coffee and fruit drinks and replace them with unsweetened tea and coffee. 6. Eat more protein. Eating foods high in protein can make you feel full longer than when you eat a meal with no protein-rich food. So include an egg, meat, or any other source of protein to make you less hungery later. 7. Surround yourself with low-calorie foods.
